About the river...

The Chungara River is located in a narrow valley with a steep gradient, and runs over the lone road that connects Ichoca with the rest of civilization. In the dry season the river is just a minor impediment, being only a few inches deep of the roadway. However, in the wet season the river is insurmountable by foot. The lone bus passing through, which provides transportation to nearby Tablachaca, Konani, and continuing all the way to La Paz, is out of service during the weeks of highest water. This leaves all of the farmers and families adjacent to town without access to school, hospital, and market for extended periods of time.

Bridging for the better...

The bridge provides Ichoca and its neighbors a stable route from each other, regardless of season. Over 99% of Ichocans travel by foot or bike and often use donkeys to carry heavy items such as harvested potatoes and wheat, all of which can now rely on the footbridge for passage.

About the town...

The town of Ichoca resides in the mountains between La Paz and Cochabamba at an elevation of 12,000 feet. There are over 700 residents and its alcaldia represents them along with the 85 surrounding communities. While farmers have lived in the area for as long as history the town only started to grow recently. Being led by a very caring and determined mayor and with the help of favoring policies by President Evo Morales, they are one of the quickest developing communities in rural Bolivia.
